This winter, whether you’re plowing the driveway, hitting the snowy trails, or out hunting the first thing you’ll need is an appropriate set of ATV snow tires.
Choosing the Right ATV Snow Tires
In very deep snow, you want a tire with medium lug depth, to avoid getting stuck. Although you could eventually dig yourself out with aggressive tires, what you’re looking for is an ATV snow tire with good flotation. This is exactly what it sounds like; you want your vehicle to “float” on top of the snow instead of sinking in.
On the other hand, if you’re riding your ATV in the snow that isn’t quite as deep, and you want to make sure that when the wheels find the ground they can dig in and get you where you need to go, you may want a tire with deeper lugs. In that case, ATV mud tires can double as ATV snow tires.
Our Recommended Ply on Snow Tires
If you are an occasional or weekend enthusiast, then you can get by with mud tires that you can use year-round. Our tire experts recommend the tires you choose are at a minimum 4 ply rated. You never know what’s under the snow you are on.
We do carry a few 2 ply ATV snow tires. The 2 ply snow tires are designed for use on top of ice and snow and primarily used for higher speeds and racing. If you need to dig into the cold stuff, you need a heavier ply tire.
If you use your ATV more frequently, or carry heavier loads like maybe an extra 200 pounds of deer on your return trip, you should consider a 6 or 8 ply tire. In addition to better puncture resistance, you need the thicker tires for the added load capacity.
If the terrain is fairly rough, look for tires that have added shoulder protection such as wrap-around tread lugs.
