The #1 Mistake Riders Make When Choosing ATV & UTV Tires
When it comes to getting the best ride out of your ATV or UTV, most people focus on horsepower, shocks, or accessories. But the real difference-maker is often hiding in plain sight.
We released an episode of Tread Talk last month that covers the #1 mistake riders make when choosing their tires. Watch the video below or keep reading for a full breakdown.
The #1 Mistake Is…
No matter how tough your machine is, the wrong tread pattern can hold you back. Sure, manufacturers will label tires for “mud,” “all-terrain,” or “hardpack,” but the real key is learning how to read the tread itself.
Understanding a tread pattern comes down to three main factors:

Once you know what to look for in each, choosing the right tire gets much easier. Let’s dive right into it!
Key Factor #1: Lug Depth & Spacing
Lug depth and spacing affect how your tire grips and clears terrain.
- Deep, wide lugs → Best for mud and loose ground. They dig in, grab traction, and self-clean by ejecting mud or debris as the tire spins. Example: Innova Mud Gear.
- Tight, shallow lugs → Better for hardpack, gravel, or trails. More rubber touches the ground, giving you smoother contact and more predictable grip.

⚠️ Put a mud tire on hardpack and you’ll end up with a bouncy, noisy ride, and wear your tread down fast.
Quick tip:
- Deep & wide = soft, messy terrain
- Tight & shallow = hard, compact surfaces
Key Factor #2: Tread Shape & Direction
The shape and layout of the tread tell you how the tire moves through terrain.
- Directional tread (V-shaped patterns): Pushes forward with speed and clears mud and water effectively. Great for mud runs and fast trail riding.
- Non-directional tread (blocky, uniform patterns): Provides equal traction in every direction. Perfect for crawling, backing up, or working around property.

Ask yourself: Do you ride forward and fast most of the time? Or do you need flexibility for technical maneuvers?
Key Factor #3: Construction & Rubber Compound
Finally, the material and build of the tire matter just as much as the tread itself.
- Softer compounds: More flexible, smoother ride, excellent traction on slick trails. Downside? They wear faster.
- Stiffer compounds: More durable, especially on hard surfaces, and better for hauling or towing.
- Reinforced sidewalls: Extra protection against sharp rocks, roots, and impacts. A must if you’re riding rough terrain.

Rule of thumb:
- Softer = grip and comfort
- Stiffer = durability and hauling
- Reinforced sidewalls = protection on rough trails
How to Pick the Right Tread
Now that you know what each part of the tread does, here’s how to match tires to your riding style
- Trail / Hardpack Riders
- Look for lower lugs, tighter spacing, and balanced patterns.
- Gives smoother contact, predictable traction, and less vibration.
- Mud Riders
- Choose deep, widely spaced lugs (usually directional).
- Tires bite into slop and throw mud clear.
- Sand / Dunes
- Paddle tires are designed to scoop and float. Perfect for sand, but not versatile for other terrains.
- Mixed Terrain / All-Around Riders
- Go with hybrid all-terrain tires.
- Medium lugs, moderate spacing, and versatile tread that handles a bit of everything.
- Street / Pavement Riders

Quick Checklist Before You Buy:
✔ Know your terrain
✔ Check lug depth, spacing, and shape
✔ Match tread to your riding, not your buddy’s build or the coolest-looking tire
